Your Guide to a Pest Free Summer - Common Crawling Insects

With those hot summer days fast approaching, pests around the home are set to become a common sight, but, getting rid of these effectively doesn’t need to be difficult, especially if the right steps are taken and the right products used.

The key to keeping pests away is to keep your home clean. This includes mopping up food spills/crumbs, not leaving dirty pots to pile up and disposing of rubbish. It’s also recommended to keep sugar and other dry ingredients stored in sealed containers.

If pests still find their way into your home, consider using the pest control products highlighted below:

Cockroach Control

Cockroaches (otherwise known as ‘roaches’) are common insects, with around 4,600 species worldwide. About 30 cockroach species are associated with human habitats and five of those are well known as pests.

Two of the most common types of cockroach pest locally are the American cockroach and the German cockroach.

Cockroaches are commonly found around pipes, stoves, and sinks, especially in humid areas like bathrooms and around laundry appliances. Areas with food, water and dark spaces to hide are ideal environments for cockroaches to live.

Ant Control

The commonest species that invades houses is the Black Garden Ant, which is actually very dark brown. Ants are highly organised social insects. It is the foraging worker ants that invade buildings in search of food. These are from 3 to 5mm in length and are attracted to sweet foodstuffs which they take back to the nest to feed to the larvae and queen.

Ants make their nests in the ground and they will build very elaborate tunnels and chambers to house eggs, food and their young underground.

By knowing about the habitat of these common crawling insects we can list down simple, precautionary steps which we can take in order to safeguard our environment!

  1. Keep all areas clean and tidy

  2. Close off entry points such as drains, doors/windows

  3. Apply a residual insecticide such as Cyperkill and Deltrinate
